Clear or frosted acrylic makes for a good cheap, easily washed cutting surface while protecting your benchtops. Because it can be cut and shaped easily, it can be integrated into almost any modern kitchen. The example shown is a commercial product, but there is no reason you can’t make your own, especially if you have something a little different in mind.

Acrylic (Perspex) is not heat resistant however, and is unsuitable for resting pots and pans on. With the right material you can have a lightweight, tough, dishwasher safe cutting board that won’t absorb odours.
